The Culture Show confirms: Jim Powell is one of the 12 Best New Novelists!

The Breaking of Eggs

In a special night of programming for World Book Night, The Culture Show tasked a panel of 5 judges, chaired by professor of English John Mullan, to examine the debut novels of writers published in the last two years and to identify the most important new voices in British literary fiction.

Their final list of twelve includes our very own Jim Powell, author of The Breaking of Eggs! Broadcaster, critic and Culture Show panellist Alex Clark says The Breaking of Eggs ‘piques the interest from the first page… [and] moves cleverly between the comic, the serious and the terribly painful.’

The Breaking of Eggs tells the story of Feliks, a communist sympathiser who has spent his life editing a travel guide to Eastern Europe. But change is in the air… As he is reunited with his long-lost brother and comes face-to-face with the love he let slip through his fingers, Feliks has to face up to the possibility that the convictions he has based his life upon were nothing but smoke and mirrors.

New Novelists: 12 of the Best airs on BBC 2 at 9pm on Saturday, March 5. Please tune in to see an interview with Jim Powell and learn more about his fantastic debut novel.
