Every minute of every day, someone somewhere needs blood. It might be in the case of an accident or emergency, for operations like hip replacements, for mothers and babies during childbirth, for transplants and also to treat patients with cancer and rare blood disorders. With some blood components such as platelets having a shelf life of just a few days, there is a constant need to maintain an adequate blood supply for hospitals up and down the country.

Donating blood is easy – in fact, the actual donation should take less than 10 minutes, with the whole process including refreshments taking under an hour. Afterwards you will feel great, knowing that you have done something very special.

To become a blood donor and book an appointment call the Donor Line now on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk. First time donors should be aged between 17-65, weigh at least 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health. If you've donated before, you can start again up to your 70th birthday.

Did You Know...

  • The NHS needs 7,000 voluntary donations of blood every day and just 4% of people who can give blood, do.
  • Donors of all blood types are needed, particularly O negative which is known as the "universal donor". Their blood can be given to anybody, which can be vital in an emergency when someone's blood type is unknown.
  • Donating blood regularly – around three times a year – helps NHSBT ensure they have the level of blood stocks needed to help those in need of vital transfusions.

We're also offering you the opportunity to win the ultimate True Blood bundle, including a signed copy of every published Sookie Stackhouse book, the first three seasons of True Blood on DVD and much, much more. Find out full details and how to enter here.
