Kate Winslet won the award for best actress in a mini series at the annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles for her performance in Mildred Pierce.
The HBO drama, which aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK, is an adaptation of James M. Cain’s critically-acclaimed novel by the same name, a Depression-era classic. It is the story of a determined and ambitious woman who, after her feckless husband abandons her, builds a successful business through hard work and sacrifice in order to ensure the future of her pampered and selfish daughter. But she isn't prepared for the intrigues and devastating betrayals of those closest to her.
Winslet dedicated the award to her mother saying: "It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do in your life, you never stop needing your mum."
